why 88x31 buttons

anyone know why those buttons to go from sites to sites ( like status cafe's one ) are 88*31 pixels specifically ?

or where do they even come from originally ?

I made one for my site cause everyone have one but idk

They were popularised by Geocities which had a mandatory 88 x 31 button, though I don't know whether anybody really knows why they chose such an arbitrary number. The most likely reason might be something as simple as 'That size fit the best between other stuff [for the first web developer who would use it]' or 'The original artist drew a random banner and went with what looked good without really looking at the size.' But that's just conjecture, and I don't think anybody actually knows why.

Other proposed theories are that it was popularised by Netscape or Yahoo!, but neither still have any actual reasoning for why that size in specific.
